Kultūrinės realijos ir jų vertimo strategijos Viktorijos Hislop romane „Saulėtekis“

Translation is a sophisticated process and representatives of this profession are supposed to channel a range of abilities. Besides being experts of languages and their use, translators are required to be critical thinkers when selecting the appropriate translation techniques and solving conceptual barriers that hinder the translation process. This master’s thesis aims to analyse the translation of culturespecific items (CSIs) found in the novel The Sunrise (2014) by Victoria Hislop. Culture-specific items have been identified as one of the prevalent challenges that translators face, and the ideas of Peter Newmark, Javier Franco Aixela, Ulrika Persson, Mona Baker and other reputable representatives of the field. Their suggested notions and classifications are interpreted and combined to create a united definition for the concept of culture-specific items. Furthermore, the categorisation of translation strategies by Eirlys E. Davies is applied to analyse the translation of the detected CSIs. The theoretical portion of this thesis focuses on a range of concepts and features. First of all, the definition of culture is established by following the viewpoints of Raymond Williams (1961), Peter Newmark (1988), Michael A. Moodian (2009), and other significant scholars. Secondly, the theoretical aims to provide a united definition for culture-specific items that will be employed in this thesis. Thirdly, translation strategies that are prevalent when translating CSIs are enumerated, the majority of them deriving from the model introduced by Eirlys E. Davies. Fourthly, the translation process will be discussed from the perspective of it being a pivotal action of a more effective crosscultural communication. The last sections of the theoretical part focus on the cultural and political representations in the The Sunrise, and translation of culture-specific items and their overall impact on the quality of the translation. The analytical part consists of two major portions: categorization of the CSIs found in the Victoria Hislop’s novel The Sunrise and their translation to the Lithuanian language. In total, 134 culture-specific items were found in the novel, and they were categorized in 12 individual groups according to their meaning. The final section of this thesis presents the results, prevalent translation strategies and other insights concluded during the analysis.Vertimas yra sudėtingas procesas ir šios srities specialistai turi būti ne tik puikūs užsienio ir gimtųjų kalbų ekspertai, bet ir gebėti kritiškai įvertinti ir pasirinkti vertimo metodus. Vienas iš pagrindinių vertėjų uždavinių yra efektyviai spręsti įvairias iškilusias problemas, įskaitant įvairius kultūrinius barjerus. Šiame magistriniame darbe yra analizuojamos kultūrinės realijos iš Viktorijos Hislop romano „Saulėtekis“ (2014 m.). Tokie vertimo ekspertai kaip Peter Newmark, Javier Franco Aixela, Ulrika Persson ir Mona Baker teigia, kad kultūrinės realijos yra vienos iš sudėtingiausių vertėjų uždavinių. Jų teorijos ir apibrėžimai yra naudojami siekiant sukurti vieningą kultūrinių realijų apibrėžimą. Šis tyrimas taip pat naudojasi Eirlys E. Davies sukurta vertimo strategijų klasifikacija. Teorinėje darbo dalyje aprašomos įvarios idėjos ir sąvokos. Pirmiausia, atsižvelgiama į kultūros apibrėžimą, kuris pateikiamas remiantis Raymond Williams (1961), Peter Newmark (1988), Michael A. Moodian (2009) ir kitais vertimo srities atstovais. Toliau aptariamos kultūrinės realijos, pateikiamas vieningas apibrėžimas. Aprašomos galimos vertimo strategijos ir pateikiama šiame tyrime naudojama klasifikacija. Taip pat, aptariamas tikrinių vardų vertimas ir romane pateikiama kultūrinė ir politinė situacija. Praktinėje dalyje sugrupuojamos kultūrinės realijos iš Viktorijos Hislop romano „Saulėtekis“ ir analizuojamos vertimo strategijos, kurias vertėja Sigrida Rupšytė panaudojo šio romano vertime į lietuvių kalbą. Iš viso buvo rasta 134 kultūrinės realijos ir jos padalintos į 12 atskirų grupių. Daugiausia kultūrinių realijų buvo susijusios su maistu bei gėrimais. Paskutinė tyrimo dalis atskleidžia šio darbo rezultatus, dažniausiai naudotas vertimo strategijas ir kitus vertingus pastebėjimus.Užsienio kalbų, literatūros ir vertimo studijų katedraHumanitarinių mokslų fakulteta
